MEMBER OF THE WEEK:

A very special unannounced event took place in shul last Shabbat, July 16 th . A dear friend who underwent serious surgery many months ago surprised everyone by coming to shul to see his many buddies and say hello and give thanks for his continued recovery. That very special person was someone loved and admired by all, as could be seen in the sincere warm greetings and wishes bestowed on an ever smiling, ever courageous and ever good hearted JACK CARON.

One by one, every single congregant rushed to his side, some to give him a hug, some to share in the warmth of his contagious smile, some to simply greet him with a loving handshake, all to express their pure joy at seeing him back in his beloved and precious second home, the Young Israel of Chomedey.

JACK could easily be the poster boy for our shul. In spite of setbacks, tragedies and health problems, JACK, like the Young Israel of Chomedey, continues to fight, determined to hang in there and do his part to keep the community going. A gentle man and a gentleman, JACK always has a humourous story to share and a beautiful twinkle in his eyes. He has proud ties to our glorious past and a dogged determination to help us create a new and revitalized future. There are not too many people around who are as beloved and admired as JACK CARON. He is everyone's friend, everyone's confidante. We plan to see JACK back in shul on many more occasions and, with G-d's help, for many years to come.

I've Learned

Written by Andy Rooney , a man who has the gift of saying so much with so few words.

I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned....
That just one person saying to me, 'You've made my day!' makes my day.

I've learned .... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned .... That being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned .... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.

I've learned .... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

I've learned .... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I've learned .... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned .... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned .... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned ... . That we should be glad G-d doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned .... That money doesn't buy class.

I've learned .... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned ... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I've learned .... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned .... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned .... That love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned .... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people
Smarter than I am.

I've learned .... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned .. That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned ... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I've learned .... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned .... That when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned .... That I wish I could have told my Mom and Dad that I love them one more time before they passed away.

I've learned .... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned .... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned .... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.

I've learned .... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned .... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Gilad Shalit's mother is writing a letter to her son

This is my son. The first life that I created. Part of my body my soul and my love.
I heard his voice for 20 years. From the moment he arrived in this world to our last telephone conversation:
“ Mom, I am returning home, can you hear me. “
I heard his voice as clearly as I heard his first cry as a baby.
I can still hear his cry at night when he was a child.
You never gave me peace to sleep at night.

I used to lie next to you pacifying you.

When you were sick the first time, I was so worried about you.
I took you to your first day at school and you made me promise that I would return to bring you home.

This I promised you. I have never broken my promises to you.

I have all your drawings on the fridge and the walls of the kitchen so that you would know

that this is your home amongst your drawings and the memories of you.
You grew up to quickly in front of my old and tired eyes.

At your bar mitzvah I suddenly saw how quickly you had grown. I was the proudest mother in the world.
You grew up to be successful, charming and clever. (This is my son, I thought then, this is my son)
When you started going out with your friends part of me would go with you.
I used to hug you and ask you to be careful. “Don't worry mom, I am a big boy”
I used to wake up at night looking at my watch and thinking, where are you,
I am waiting for you to return home. All I wanted was for you to come back safely.

When I heard you falling into bed from exhaustion, I knew that you were home safely with me.

Then I would be able to go to sleep myself peacefully.

When you got your driving license, I used to pray that you would travel safely

and not swerve into the gutter and you would not knock another car.

I hoped you would not drive if you did not have to.

You never disappointed me and you were always responsible and happy.

I was always thrilled to see your smile even though I had sleepless nights worrying you.
When you received your first call up papers to the army, my heart skipped a few beats.

You were only 17 years old.

You came back very proud and happy with big bright shinny eyes.

I wished that you would not have to go to combat and that you would not get called to a dangerous zone.

You just wanted to protect your country.

It is not the country that raised you, it is Me, I who raised you.

The day that you shut the door behind you and you traveled to do your army service.

I counted the days till you would return home.

I decided then and there that I would go to Shul and to thank G-d and ask him to return my son to me safely. Instead of going out I would wash your uniforms and prepare food for when you would come home.
The day that I heard loud knocking on the front door, I knew something was terribly wrong.

I opened the door praying that I would not see what I saw.
Two uniformed army personnel and an army medic.

One was your commander and he held my hand tightly.

I did not have to hear the words he was telling me.

The darkness cut the blood supply from my veins in my arm and I understood that something was terribly wrong.
In the news they show your photographs. I go to Shul and I pray.

I pray all the time, even when I am sleeping, I am praying.

This is my son, my son who was snatched into Gaza .

My son who might never return.

PLEASE HELP ME IN MY PRAYERS!

Aviva Shalit

You may know that El Al and JetBlue recently signed an agreement to provide connecting options for customers flying between the United States and Israel .

Copy of a leaked memo from El Al to JetBlue employees

Subject: Unique aspects of a flight to Israel

Dear JetBlue employees:

Welcome to the El Al family - or as we say in Hebrew, Bruchim haba'im!

We're so excited about our new partnership. We here at Israel's national air carrier are eager to make this transition as smooth as possible and thought it would be helpful to sensitize you to some of the cultural differences you may encounter with your new customer base.

Security lines: Passengers are instructed to arrive at the airport six hours before a flight. This may seem excessive, but Israel 's crack security service demands it on the theory that no terrorist would be dedicated enough to spend six hours in a crowd of Jews. Kidding! The six-hour time period allows our security team to ask essential questions of our passengers, including "Do you have family in Israel ? Where do they live? What is the purpose of your visit?" It also allows time for the person behind you in line to ask the very same questions, in even greater detail. What you might call "intrusive rudeness" is merely what our people call "Jewish geography."

Luggage: We allow each passenger to stow luggage weighing up to 6,000 pounds. Again, this may seem generous by American standards, but it is in response to our passengers' need to bring books for their cousins in B'nei Brak, appliances for their neighbors' in-laws in French Hill, and industrial-size boxes of M & M's for Israeli soldiers.

Boarding: We board our flights for maximum efficiency, in the following order: Families with young children, families with six or more young children, families with eight or more young children, individuals with physical limitations, individuals with aches and pains that may be something but they won't know until they see a specialist, individuals who cut in line.

Carry-on luggage: You may not think a double stroller, six Borsalino hat boxes, and a Samsung flat-screen television are able to fit in an overhead bin, but please don't underestimate our passengers. During this portion of the flight it might be a good idea for flight attendants to retreat to the galley and have a beer. Or two.

Safety instructions: Hebrew is written from right to left. Similarly, in order to accommodate our passengers' unique sensibility, our instructions are delivered backward. When we say, "Please do NOT stow items under the seat in front of you," our passengers think, "I'll damn well stow my items anywhere I want to," before stowing them under the seat. When we say, "Please move freely about the cabin," our passengers respond, "If they think I am budging from this seat, they have another think coming." It works like a charm.

In-flight behavior: At some point during the lengthy overseas flight, bearded men will crowd the aisle, wrapped in leather straps and white shawls. Do not be alarmed! They will not ask you to join them!

Food service: As a Jewish airline, we serve clientele with unique dietary needs. Our choices include kosher, glatt kosher, kosher dairy, kosher meat, kosher pareve, glatt kosher dairy, gluten-free kosher meat, lactose-free kosher with nuts, lactose-free kosher without nuts, low-salt kosher pareve, high-salt gluten-free kosher meat, and "just bring me a box of cereal and some milk." Remain calm and do not reach for the emergency chute.

Landing: Passengers will often burst into applause when the plane touches down in Israel. This is because a) they are deeply moved by the thought of arriving in the Land of their Ancestors; b) they are still surprised, even after 60 years, that a Jew can safely pilot an airplane.

We hope you find these tips useful as you welcome El Al passengers aboard JetBlue.

HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK.
